Hidden and Forgotten History Marker

As I was roaming around Kawit back roads today, I noticed an old, unkempt marker on a vacant lot looking oddly out of place. I stopped to take a closer look, and it was an undated commemorative tablet of some sort. It read:

COMMEMORATIVE TABLET TO THE FLAG'S FIRST VICTORY
At Alapan, for the first time, on May 28, 1898, was carried to victory, in baptism of blood and fire, the tri-colored Philippine National Flag. The battle over, the Spanish forces surrendered to the Filipino hosts who saved the Red, White and Blue and raised the "Sun and Stars" to glory.

Donated by General Esteban de la Rama, Secretario de Marina in Aguinaldo's cabinet 1898-1899. Presented at the request of Mr. Luis Elba who interested the donor in the significance of this event in our military history.

I hope this marker gets noticed and preserved for future generations to see.

I added the location in Google Maps here.

Poctol, San Juan, Batangas in OSM

Sadly, my uncle (my dad's eldest brother) passed away last week.My sister and I decided to go and visit over the weekend, having this the only free time we had. Off to San Juan, Batangas.

It's been a while since I was back and I've been wanting to gather GPS data to continue mapping roads in Google Map Maker. Once there, I borrowed a bicycle and started biking around, choosing a portion of the town I haven't been to before. After an hour or so, I have as much data I could gather.

Sunday, before going home, I went on a motorbike to visit some cousins. I then noticed that my phone then slipped out of my pocket and fell onto the road. Data. Gone.

Fortunately, my cousin was a policeman and another was the Barangay Captain there. Pulled some strings and so, I have my phone back again. Not without the phone being interested on by the person who found it.

The phone's been reset, sim card and memory card gone. Goodbye data.

I'll try again someday when I get back there.

How to Use MyTracks to Help Editing Roads in MapMaker

I came about using MyTracks for Android when my friend Kevin shared his post about motorbiking. After a while, we came to ask, "How can we use our MyTracks information to edit roads in MapMaker?" We both knew that most provincial roads have not been mapped yet, or mapped incorrectly, in Google Maps. The outright answer at the time was to open the MyTracks information in Google Maps on one window, and edit the same location in Google MapMaker on another window. Just Alt-Tab to switch back and forth while editing. Doable, but good luck with that.

Just dawned on me today. I could use the KML information uploaded by MyTracks as an overlay on MapMaker. Then it will be my guide on editing road features on the map. That was easy!

Get the KML link on Google Maps

Add the KML as an overlay in MapMaker

Edit!
I can't wait to go to San Juan, Batangas and do it!
